Our founder had a special feeling for vulnerable people, especially children. Her unique life story included periods when she enjoyed a privileged lifestyle, both in childhood and as an adult, alternating with periods of hardship. This gave her a big heart for fairness. In 2000 she decided it was time to take her good intentions one step further and formed this family foundation.
Our mission has been to support Maine's most vulnerable populations. Our specific interest areas are:
Children, elderly and displaced
Basic human needs
Programs that enhance human health, social equality or Maine's economy and workforce
Until 2013, the Next Generation Foundation awarded small
grants to nursing homes, community organizations, health support
organizations, schools, hospice programs, and social change
With a new infusion of funds from the founder's estate, we launched a
large grants program in 2014. We received 726 Letters of Inquiry from
which we selected 115 to submit full proposals. From May to November, we
made 80 site visits and awarded grants to 79 organizations (some of which we did not visit).
We aim to not only support nonprofits, but make them stronger.
